✧ There was a man in Syria called Maʿdān whom Abū al-Dardāʾ was teaching the Qur'an. Abū al-Dardāʾ missed him, and one day he met him while he was at Dābiq. Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him: 'O Maʿdān, what happened to the Qur'an you had? How are you with the Qur'an today?' He said: 'God has taught me from it, and it is good.' He said: 'O Maʿdān, are you living today in a city or in a village?' He said: 'No, rather in a village close to the city.' He said: 'Wait, woe to you, O Maʿdān! I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: There are no five households among whom the call to prayer is not made and in whose midst prayers are not established, except that Satan gains mastery over them. The wolf takes the stray sheep. So keep to the cities, woe to you, O Maʿdān.'
