✧ Some people from my tribe told me to ask Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab about a spearhead they sharpen and plant in the ground, so that in the morning a hyena is found killed. Do you consider that a proper slaughter? He said: So I sat with Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, and there was an old man with white hair and beard from the people of Syria. I asked him about that. He said to me: 'Do you eat hyena?' He said: I said: 'I have never eaten it, but some people from my tribe do eat it.' He said: 'Eating it is not lawful.' Then the old man said: 'O servant of God, shall I not tell you a hadith I heard from Abū al-Dardāʾ, who narrated it from the Messenger of God ﷺ?' He said: I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I heard Abū al-Dardāʾ say: The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade every animal that snatches (prey), every stolen spoil, every animal that is tied up and shot, and every predator with a fang.' He said: Then Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab said: 'He spoke the truth.'
