✧ About me—by God—and about Aws b. Ṣāmit did God, Mighty and Majestic, send down the opening of Sūrat al-Mujādilah. She said: I was with him, and he was an old man whose character had turned bad and who had become irritable. She said: One day he came in to me, and I argued with him about something. He became angry and said: “You are to me like my mother's back.” She said: Then he went out and sat in the gathering place of his people for a while. Then he came in to me, and there he was wanting me for himself. She said: I said: “No, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Khuwaylah, you will not get to me—after what you have said—until God and His Messenger judge between us with His ruling.” She said: He pounced on me, and I resisted him, and I overcame him as a woman overcomes a weak old man, and I threw him off me. She said: Then I went out to one of my neighbors and borrowed her clothes. Then I went out until I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and sat before him. I told him what I had encountered from him, and I began to complain to him ﷺ about what I suffered from his bad character. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ kept saying: “O Khuwaylah, your cousin is an old man, so fear God concerning him!” She said: By God, I did not leave until the Qur'an came down concerning me. The Messenger of God ﷺ was covered with what used to cover him, and then it was lifted from him. He said to me: “O Khuwaylah, God has sent down [revelation] concerning you and your companion.” Then he recited to me: “God has heard the words of the one who disputes with you about her husband and complains to God, and God hears your mutual conversation. Indeed, God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing” up to His words: “and for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.” [She said:] The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: “Order him to free a slave.” She said: I said: “By God, O Messenger of God, he does not have what he could free.” He said: “Then let him fast two consecutive months.” She said: I said: “By God, O Messenger of God, he is an old man; there is no fasting in him.” He said: “Then let him feed sixty poor people a wasq of dates.” She said: I said: “By God, O Messenger of God, he does not have that.” She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Then we will help him with an ʿaraq of dates.” She said: I said: “And I, O Messenger of God, will help him with another ʿaraq.” He said: “You have done well and acted beautifully. Go and give charity [with it] on his behalf, then take good care of your cousin.” She said: So I did.
