✧ My husband Abū ʿAmr b. Ḥafṣ b. al-Mughīrah sent ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah to me with my divorce, and he sent me five ṣāʿs of dates and five ṣāʿs of barley. I said: “I have no maintenance except this, and I will not observe my waiting period in your house.” He said: “No.” So I tied my clothes firmly, then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: “How many times did he divorce you?” I said: “Three.” He said: “He spoke the truth. You have no maintenance. Observe your waiting period in the house of your cousin Ibn Umm Maktūm, for he is blind; you can lay aside your clothes there. When your waiting period ends, inform me.” She said: Then suitors proposed to me, among them Muʿāwiyah and Abū al-Jahm. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Muʿāwiyah is poor and of little means, and Abū al-Jahm beats women—[rather, he is harsh with women—so upon you] is Usāmah b. Zayd”—or he said: “Marry Usāmah b. Zayd.”
