machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Ayyūb, Maʿmar, Mālik, ʿUbaydullāh b. Abī Ziyād, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Isḥāq, Sufyān b. Ḥusayn, Ibn ʿUyaynah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb narrated it from al-Zuhrī, and he added a phrase that no one else brought. He said: then he recited this verse: {ولا تجعلوا الله عرضة لأيمانكم} (the verse). Al-Zubaydī, Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah and al-Jarrāḥ b. al-Minhāl narrated it from al-Zuhrī with this chain and added in it: he said: "He did not permit anything of what people say is a lie except in three cases." It is said that this is not from the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ but is rather from the words of al-Zuhrī, and whoever said in it "she said: and he did not permit" has erred; rather it is "he said," meaning al-Zuhrī. It was likewise narrated from Yaʿqūb b. ʿAṭāʾ from al-Zuhrī, and likewise Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh and ʿAmr b. Qays narrated it from al-Zuhrī. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Abī Bakr narrated this hadith from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd, from his mother, that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say that he would not permit any lying except in three cases that the Prophet ﷺ did not count as lying, and he mentioned the three. This is rejected (munkar), and he did not bring the preserved (maḥfūẓ) hadith which the people have. Ibn Jurayj narrated it from al-Zuhrī along the lines of the narration of ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, for another hadith than this was narrated from him, and it is said that Ibn Jurayj said in this: "I was told from al-Zuhrī," which indicates the correctness of what we have said. Muʿāwiyah b. Yaḥyā al-Ṣadafī narrated it from al-Zuhrī and erred in its chain, making it from Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf from his mother, whereas the correct version is that it is from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Jaʿfar b. Burqān narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Kathīr b. Hishām narrated it from Jaʿfar, from al-Zuhrī, from Umm Kulthūm as a mursal report, and Zuhayr b. Muʿāwiyah contradicted him, narrating it from Jaʿfar b. Burqān, from Maymūn b. Mihrān, from Umm Kulthūm. There is also disagreement about Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān: Ibrāhīm narrated it from him, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd, from his mother, and Usāmah b. Zayd contradicted him, saying from Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, from Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm, from Abū Salamah, from Umm Kulthūm. The correct one is the hadith of Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī and those who followed him.
