✧ A man invited us, and he brought a table with thirteen dabb lizards on it. He said: That was in the evening, with some eating and some abstaining. When morning came, we went to Ibn ʿAbbās, and I asked him about it. His companions spoke at length about it until one of them said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it.” Ibn ʿAbbās said: How bad is what you said! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent only as one who makes things lawful and unlawful. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with Maymūnah, and with him were al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās, Khālid b. al-Walīd, and a woman. A table was brought with bread and dabb meat. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached for it, Maymūnah said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, it is dabb meat.” He withdrew his hand and said: “It is meat I have not eaten, but you may eat.” So al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās, Khālid b. al-Walīd, and the woman ate. Maymūnah said: “I will not eat from food that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not eat.”
