✧ He married a woman and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his help with her dowry. He said: "How much did you give as dowry?" He said: "I said, two hundred dirhams." He said: "If you were scooping up dirhams from this valley of yours, you would not increase it. I have nothing to give you." He said: I stayed for a while, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me and sent me on a military expedition toward Najd. He said: "Go out on this expedition; perhaps you will gain something, and I will give it to you." We went out until we reached the settlement at nightfall. When the darkness of 'Isha' had passed, our commander sent us out two by two. We surrounded the camp, and he said: "When I say the takbir and attack, then say the takbir and attack." When he sent us two by two, he also said: "Do not separate, and I will ask one of you about the news of his companion, and I will not find it with him, and do not go too far in pursuit." When we were about to attack, I heard a man from the settlement cry out, "O greenery," and I took it as a good omen that we would gain greenery from them. When the night had fully darkened, our commander said the takbir and attacked, and we said the takbir and attacked. A man with a sword in his hand passed by me, and I followed him. My companion said to me: "Our commander has instructed us not to go too far in pursuit, so turn back." When I saw that I must follow him, he said: "By Allah, you will turn back, or I will go back to him and tell him that you refused." I said: "By Allah, I will follow him." So I followed him until I drew near to him and shot him with an arrow on the bare part of his back, and he fell. He said: "Come near, O Muslim, to Paradise." When he saw that I would not come near him and I shot him with another arrow, wounding him severely, he threw his sword at me but missed. I took the sword and killed him with it, and cut off his head with it. Then we raided and took many camels and sheep. Then we departed. In the morning, I found my camel being led by another camel on which was a beautiful young woman. She kept looking behind her and saying takbir. I said to her: "What are you looking back at?" She said: "At a man who, by Allah, if he is alive, has mixed with you." I said, thinking he was my companion whom I had killed: "By Allah, I have killed him, and this is his sword, hanging on the saddle of the camel I am riding." And the scabbard of the sword, with nothing in it, was hanging on the saddle of her camel. When I said that to her, she said: "Here is this scabbard, sheath it in it if you are truthful." I took it and sheathed it, and it fitted perfectly. When she saw that, she wept. Then we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me from the camels that we had brought.
