حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ عَنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي حَدْرَدٍ قَالَ
بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى إِضَمَ فَخَرَجْتُ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِيهِمْ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ رِبْعِيٍّ وَمُحَلَّمُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ فَخَرَجْنَا حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِبَطْنِ إِضَمَ مَرَّ بِنَا عَامِرٌ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَلَى قَعُودٍ لَهُ مَعَهُ مُتَيِّعٌ وَوَطْبٌ مِنْ لَبَنٍ فَلَمَّا مَرَّ بِنَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا فَأَمْسَكْنَا عَنْهُ وَحَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَلَّمُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ فَقَتَلَهُ بِشَيْءٍ كَانَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ وَأَخَذَ بَعِيرَهُ وَمُتَيِّعَهُ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ الْخَبَرَ نَزَلَ فِينَا الْقُرْآنُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فَعِنْدَ اللهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٌ كَذَلِكَ كُنْتُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَمَنَّ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَتَبَيَّنُوا إِنَّ اللهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا} [النساء 94]

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to Idam. I set out with a group of Muslims, among them Abu Qatadah al-Harith b. Rib'i and Muhallim b. Jaththamah b. Qays. We went out until we reached the bottom of Idam. 'Amir al-Ashja'i passed by us on a camel of his, with him a small water-skin and a leather container of milk. When he passed by us, he greeted us with salam, but we held back from him. Muhallim b. Jaththamah attacked him and killed him because of something that had been between them, and took his camel and his water-skin. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the news, the Qur'an was revealed concerning us: {O you who believe, when you go forth in the way of Allah, be discerning, and do not say to one who offers you peace, "You are not a believer," seeking the goods of the life of this world. But with Allah are abundant spoils. Thus you were before, and Allah has favored you, so be discerning. Indeed Allah is ever aware of what you do.} [al-Nisa' 94]
