✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “I have lost my sight, and floods come between me and my mosque. I wish you would come and pray in my house in a place I could take as a prayer area.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “I will do so, if Allah wills.” He said: He passed by Abu Bakr and asked him to accompany him, so he went with him. He asked permission and entered upon me. While standing, he said: “Where do you want me to pray?” I pointed to the spot where I wanted. He said: Then I detained him over a stew we had prepared for him. The people of the valley—meaning the people of the house—heard about it and flocked to him until the house was full. A man said: “Where is Malik b. al-Dukhshun?” Or perhaps he said: “Malik b. al-Dukhaykhin.” A man said: “That is a hypocrite who does not love Allah or His Messenger.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you not say—he says: ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the face of Allah?” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, as for us, we see his face and his talk leaning toward the hypocrites.” The Prophet ﷺ said again: “Do you not say—he says: ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the face of Allah?” He said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “No servant will meet the Day of Resurrection saying: ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the face of Allah, but the Fire will be forbidden for him.” Mahmud said: I narrated this hadith to a group including Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and he said: “I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said what you said.” He said: I vowed that if I returned to ʿItban, I would ask him. I returned to him and found him an old man whose sight had gone, and he was the imam of his people. I sat beside him and asked him about this hadith, and he narrated it to me just as he had narrated it to me the first time. Maʿmar said: When al-Zuhri narrated this hadith, he said: “Then obligations and matters were revealed that we think the matter ended with them, so whoever can avoid being deceived, let him not be deceived.”
