Translation

✧ There was fighting among the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. The Prophet ﷺ heard of that after the noon prayer, so he came to them to reconcile them. He said to Bilāl, 'If the prayer time comes and I have not come, tell Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' He said, 'When the prayer time arrived, he called the adhān, then the iqāma, then ordered Abū Bakr, so he went forward. When he went forward, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came. When he came, the people clapped.' He said, 'Abū Bakr, when he entered the prayer, would not turn around. When he saw they would not stop, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'He gestured to him with his hand, "Continue." Abū Bakr stepped backward, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer, he said, "O Abū Bakr, what prevented you, when I gestured to you, from continuing in your prayer?" Abū Bakr replied, "It was not fitting for the son of Abū Quḥāfa to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer." Then he said, "If something happens in the prayer, the men should say subḥān Allāh, and the women should clap."'
