Translation

✧ There was fighting among the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. The Prophet ﷺ heard of it, so he came to them after the noon prayer to reconcile them. He said, 'O Bilāl, if the prayer time comes and I have not returned, tell Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' He said, 'When the afternoon prayer time arrived, Bilāl called the iqāma, then ordered Abū Bakr, so he went forward to lead them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came after Abū Bakr had entered the prayer. When they saw him, they clapped. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came pushing through the people until he stood behind Abū Bakr.' He said, 'Abū Bakr, when he entered the prayer, would not turn around. When he saw the clapping not stopping, he turned and saw the Prophet ﷺ behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him with his hand, "Continue." Abū Bakr stood for a short while, praising Allah for that, then moved backward.' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced and led the people in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he said, "O Abū Bakr, what prevented you from continuing when I gestured to you?" Abū Bakr replied, "It was not fitting for the son of Abū Quḥāfa to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer." Then he said to the people, "If something happens in your prayer, the men should say subḥān Allāh, and the women should clap."'
