✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed on a very hot day toward Baqīʿ al-Gharqad. The people were walking behind him. When he heard the sound of sandals, that settled in his heart, so he sat down until he made them go ahead of him, so that no trace of pride would settle in his heart. When he passed by Baqīʿ al-Gharqad, there were two graves in which they had buried two men. The Prophet ﷺ stopped and said: "Whom did you bury here today?" They said: "O Prophet of Allah, so-and-so and so-and-so." He said: "They are being punished now and are being tested in their graves." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, for what?" He said: "As for one of them, he did not protect himself from urine; as for the other, he used to spread malicious gossip." He took a fresh palm branch, split it, and placed it on the two graves. They said: "O Prophet of Allah, why did you do that?" He said: "So that the punishment may be lightened for them." They said: "O Prophet of Allah, how long will they be punished?" He said: "A matter of the unseen that no one knows except Allah." He said: "Were it not for the softening of your hearts or your excessive talk in narration, you would hear what I hear."
