✧ On the day of Badr, he said: The Prophet ﷺ looked at his companions, who were three hundred and some, and looked at the polytheists, and behold they were a thousand and more. The Prophet ﷺ faced the qibla, then extended his hands while wearing his cloak and waist-wrapper, then said: 'O Allah, where is what You promised me? O Allah, fulfill what You promised me. O Allah, if You destroy this band of the people of Islam, You will never be worshipped on earth.' He said: He continued beseeching his Lord and supplicating Him until his cloak fell. Abu Bakr came to him, took his cloak and put it back on him, then embraced him from behind and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, this is enough of your earnest entreaty to your Lord, for He will surely fulfill what He promised you.' And Allah, the Exalted, revealed: 'When you sought help of your Lord and He answered you, "I will reinforce you with a thousand angels following one another."' When that day came and they met, Allah defeated the polytheists, seventy men of them were killed and seventy men of them were captured. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr, Ali, and Umar. Abu Bakr said: 'O Prophet of Allah, these are cousins, kinsmen, and brothers. I think you should take ransom from them, so that what we take from them will be strength for us against the disbelievers, and perhaps Allah will guide them and they will be a support for us.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What do you think, O Ibn al-Khattab?' I said: 'By Allah, I do not think as Abu Bakr thinks, but I think you should enable me to deal with so-and-so, a relative of Umar, and I will strike his neck; enable Ali to deal with Aqil and he will strike his neck; and enable Hamza to deal with so-and-so, his brother, and he will strike his neck, so that Allah knows that there is no leniency in our hearts toward the polytheists. These are their champions, leaders, and commanders.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ favored what Abu Bakr said and did not favor what I said, and he took ransom from them. The next day, Umar said: I went early to the Prophet ﷺ, and there he was sitting with Abu Bakr, and both of them were weeping. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah'
