✧ When the last ten days came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed i'tikaf in the mosque. When the Prophet ﷺ prayed the 'Asr prayer on Monday the twenty-second, he said: 'We will stand in prayer tonight, if Allah wills. Whoever of you wishes to stand, let him stand.' That was the night of the twenty-third. The Prophet ﷺ prayed it in congregation after the 'atamah (night prayer), until a third of the night had passed, then he departed. On the night of the twenty-fourth, he did not pray anything and did not stand. On the night of the twenty-fifth, he stood after the 'Asr prayer on the day of the twenty-fourth and said: 'We will stand in prayer tonight, if Allah wills'—meaning the night of the twenty-fifth—'so whoever wishes, let him stand.' He prayed with the people until a third of the night had passed, then departed. On the night of the twenty-sixth, he said nothing and did not stand. Then at the time of the 'Asr prayer on the day of the twenty-sixth, he stood and said: 'We will stand in prayer, if Allah wills'—meaning the night of the twenty-seventh—'so whoever wishes to stand, let him stand.' Abu Dharr said: So we steeled ourselves for the standing, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed with us until two-thirds of the night had passed, then departed to his tent in the mosque. I said to him: 'We had hoped, O Messenger of Allah, that you would pray with us until morning.' He said: 'O Abu Dharr, if you pray with your imam and depart when he departs, the qunut of your night is recorded for you.'
