✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ led us in the noon prayer, then sat in the shade of a tree. Al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis and ʿUyayna b. Ḥiṣn b. Badr stood before him, demanding blood-money for the Ashjaʿī ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ — at that time he was the chief of Qays — while al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis was defending Muḥallim b. Jaththāma on behalf of Khindif. They disputed before the Messenger of God ﷺ. We heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Will you accept the blood-money: fifty during this journey of ours and fifty when we return?' He said: ʿUyayna said: 'By God, O Messenger of God, I will not leave him until I make his women taste the grief he made my women taste.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Rather, you will accept the blood-money.' ʿUyayna refused. Then a man from Layth called Mukaytil — a short, compact man — stood up and said: 'O Prophet of God, I find no likeness for this slain man in the early days of Islam except a flock of sheep that came to water: the first of them was shot and the rest bolted. Make a ruling today and change it tomorrow.' He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ raised his hand and then said: 'Rather, you will accept the blood-money: fifty during this journey of ours and fifty when we return.' He kept urging the people until they accepted the blood-money. He said: When they accepted the blood-money, he said: 'Where is your companion, so that the Messenger of God ﷺ may ask forgiveness for him?' A dark-skinned, tall man stood up, wearing a fine garment, who had prepared himself for death, and he sat before the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he sat, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: 'What is your name?' He said: 'I am Muḥallim b. Jaththāma.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O God, do not forgive Muḥallim. O God, do not forgive Muḥallim,' three times. Then he rose from before him, catching his tears with the edge of his cloak. As for us among ourselves, we say: He asked forgiveness for him, but he showed what he showed so that people would refrain from one another.
