✧ We came as a delegation with Ziyād to Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān, and among us was Abū Bakrah. When we arrived before him, he was not pleased with any delegation as he was pleased with us, and he said: O Abū Bakrah, relate to us something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ used to like a good dream and would ask about it. One day he said: Which of you has seen a dream? A man said: I did. I saw as if a balance was let down from the sky, and you and Abū Bakr were weighed in it, and you outweighed Abū Bakr. Then Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were weighed, and Abū Bakr outweighed ʿUmar. Then ʿUmar and ʿUthmān were weighed, and ʿUmar outweighed ʿUthmān. Then the balance was lifted. He became upset by it—and Ḥammād also said: That grieved him—then he said: A caliphate upon the pattern of prophethood; then God, blessed and exalted is He, gives sovereignty to whom He wills. He said: So we were shoved in our necks and expelled. Ziyād said: May you be without a father! Could you not find a hadith other than that? Relate to him something else. He said: No, by God, I will not relate to him anything but that until I part from him. Then he left us alone, and later called for us and said: O Abū Bakrah, relate to us something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: So he hit him with it, and we were shoved in our necks and expelled. Ziyād said: May you be without a father! Can you not find a hadith other than that? Relate to him something else. He said: No, by God, I will not relate to him anything but that until I part from him. He said: Then he left us alone for some days, then called for us and said: O Abū Bakrah, relate to us something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: So he hit him with it, and Muʿāwiyah said: Do you say sovereignty? We are content with sovereignty.
