حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عِيسَى أَخْبَرَنَا عَزْرَةُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ يَعْمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ الدِّيلِيِّ قَالَ

غَدَوْتُ عَلَى عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ يَوْمًا مِنَ الْأَيَّامِ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا الْأَسْوَدِ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ: أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ، أَوْ مِنْ مُزَيْنَةَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ مَا يَعْمَلُ النَّاسُ الْيَوْمَ وَيَكْدَحُونَ فِيهِ، شَيْءٌ قُضِيَ عَلَيْهِمْ [أَوْ مَضَى] عَلَيْهِمْ فِي قَدَرٍ قَدْ سَبَقَ أَوْ فِيمَا يَسْتَقْبِلُونَ مِمَّا أَتَاهُمْ بِهِ نَبِيُّهُمْ [ ﷺ ] وَاتُّخِذَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ بِهِ الْحُجَّةُ ؟ قَالَ: بَلْ شَيْءٌ قُضِيَ عَلَيْهِمْ، وَمَضَى عَلَيْهِمْ. قَالَ: فَلِمَ يَعْمَلُونَ إِذًا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: مَنْ كَانَ اللهُ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ] خَلَقَهُ لِوَاحِدَةٍ مِنَ الْمَنْزِلَتَيْنِ يُهَيِّئُهُ لِعَمَلِهَا. وَتَصْدِيقُ ذَلِكَ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ] وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا

Translation

✧ One day I went to Imran ibn Husayn and he said, 'O Abu al-Aswad,' and mentioned the hadith: that a man from Juhaynah or from Muzaynah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about what people do today and strive in? Is it something decreed upon them [or that has passed] upon them in a destiny that preceded, or in what they will face from what their Prophet ﷺ brought them and for which the proof was established against them?' He said, 'Rather, it is something decreed upon them and passed upon them.' He said, 'Then why do they work, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Whomever Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created for one of the two stations, He prepares him for its action. And the confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic): "And by the soul and He who proportioned it, and inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness." (Qur'an 91:7-8)'
