✧ I went out in the funeral of the daughter of ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Awfā, while he was on a dark-brown mule of his, meaning black. The women kept saying to his guide: Bring him in front of the funeral, so he did. I heard him say to him: Where is the funeral? He said: Behind you. He did that once or twice, then said: Did I not forbid you to put me in front of the funeral? He heard a woman wailing, and one time he said: lamenting. He said: Stop! Did I not forbid you from this? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid lamentations. Let one of you shed from her tears what she wills. When the funeral was placed, he came forward and pronounced four takbīrs over it, then stood for a little while. Some of the people glorified Allah with him, then he turned away and said: Did you think that I would pronounce a fifth takbīr? They said: Yes. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he pronounced the fourth takbīr, would stand for a little while. When the funeral was placed, he sat and we sat with him. He was asked about the meat of domestic donkeys, and he said: On the day of Khaybar, domestic donkeys met us coming out of the village. The people fell upon them and slaughtered them. The cooking pots were boiling with some of them when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out: Spill them out. So we spilled them out. I saw on ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Awfā a green silk-trimmed cloak of khazz.
