✧ I went out with my uncle on a military expedition. I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl say to his companions: “Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God, and if we return to Madinah, the more honored will surely expel from it the more lowly.” I mentioned that to my uncle, and my uncle mentioned it to the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ sent for me and I told him. Then he sent for ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl and his companions, and they swore that they had not said it. The Messenger of God ﷺ disbelieved me and believed him. I was struck by a distress that had never struck me before, and I sat in the house. My uncle said: “What did you intend by making the Prophet ﷺ disbelieve you and detest you?” He said: until God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: “When the hypocrites come to you…” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent for me and recited it, then said: “God, Mighty and Majestic, has indeed confirmed you.”
