✧ We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey, and the people were struck by hardship. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy said to his companions: “Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disperse from around him.” And he said: “If we return to Madinah, the more honored will surely expel from it the more lowly.” So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of that. He sent for ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy and questioned him, and he swore earnestly that he had not done it. They said: “Zaid has lied to the Messenger of God ﷺ.” He said: There fell into my heart from what they said, until God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed my vindication in “When the hypocrites come to you…” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ called them to seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away. And His saying, Exalted is He: “As though they were propped-up timbers,” he said: They were men of the most handsome appearance.
