حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَزْهَرَ يَقُولُ

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ غَزَاةَ الْفَتْحِ وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ شَابٌّ، يَتَخَلَّلُ النَّاسَ يَسْأَلُ عَنْ مَنْزِلِ خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ، فَأُتِيَ بِشَارِبٍ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَضَرَبُوهُ [بِمَا] فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ، فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ ضَرَبَهُ بِنَعْلِهِ، وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ ضَرَبَهُ بِعَصًا، وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ ضَرَبَهُ بِسَوْطٍ، وَحَثَا عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ التُّرَابَ

Translation

✧ I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ during the conquest expedition, while I was a young boy, moving among the people, asking about the camp of Khalid b. al-Walid. A drinker was brought to him, and he ordered him to be struck, so they struck him with what they had in their hands. Some struck him with their sandals, some with a stick, and some with a whip, and the Messenger of God ﷺ threw dust at him.
