“Why do I see you disheveled and covered in dust since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away? Perhaps, Talha, you are displeased by the leadership of your cousin?” He said, “Allah forbid! I, more than any of you, should not do that. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Indeed, I know a phrase that no man utters in the presence of death except that his soul finds comfort in it as it leaves his body, and it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.” But I did not ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, nor did he tell me what it was. That is what has troubled me.” Umar said, “I know it.” He said, “Then praise belongs to Allah.” He asked, “What is it?” He replied, “It is the phrase he said to his uncle: “There is no god but Allah.”” Talha said, “You have spoken the truth.”

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe best of them in chain of transmission is the ḥadīth of ʿAlī b. Mushir and those who followed him, from Muṭarrif, from al-Shaʿbī, from Yaḥyā b. Ṭalḥah, from his father, and God knows best. The ḥadīth of Misʿar, from Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, is also good (ḥasan) in its chain. If it is preserved (maḥfūẓ), then Yaḥyā b. Ṭalḥah memorized it from his father, from his mother, and God knows best.
