✧ Umar gave a sermon on a Friday and mentioned the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and mentioned Abu Bakr, and said: 'I saw in a dream as if a rooster pecked me twice. I think it is nothing but the approach of my term. People are asking me to appoint a successor, but Allah will not let His religion or His caliphate be lost. By the One who sent His Prophet ﷺ, if my time comes quickly, the caliphate is to be a matter of consultation among these six with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he died. I know that some people will oppose this matter, but I have struck them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. If they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. I will not leave behind anything more important to me than al-kalalah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was never harsher with me about anything since I accompanied him than he was about al-kalalah, and I never differed with him about anything as I did about al-kalalah, until he poked me in the chest with his finger and said, "O Umar, is not the verse of summer at the end of Surat al-Nisa' sufficient for you?" If I live, I will judge concerning it with a ruling that will be carried out by those who recite the Quran and those who do not recite the Quran.' Then he said, 'O Allah, I call You as witness over the governors of the garrison cities, for I have only sent them to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ, to distribute among them their spoils, to act justly toward them, and to refer to me whatever of their affairs is unclear to them. O people, you eat two plants that I consider nothing but foul. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he detected their smell on a man in the mosque, order that he be taken by the hand and led out to al-Baqi'. So whoever eats them, let him kill their smell by cooking.'
