✧ I saw on al-Barāʾ a gold ring, and people were saying to him: “Why do you wear gold when the Prophet ﷺ forbade it?” Al-Barāʾ said: While we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ and before him was booty that he was dividing—captives and assorted goods—he divided it until this ring remained. He raised his eyes and looked at his companions, then lowered them. Then he raised his eyes and looked at them, then lowered them. Then he raised his eyes and looked at them, then said: “O Barāʾ.” I came to him and sat before him. He took the ring and grasped my wrist, then said: “Take it and wear what God and His Messenger have clothed you with.” He said: And al-Barāʾ would say: “How can you ask me to put aside what the Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘Wear what God and His Messenger have clothed you with’?”
