حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي السَّفَرِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ أَبِي مُوسَى يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ
كَانَ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا، وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: هَذَا أَوْ نَحْوَ هَذَا الْمَعْنَى، وَإِذَا نَامَ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَحْيَا وَبِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ.

✧ When he woke up he would say: “Praise be to God who gave us life after He had caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.” Shuʿba said: This or the like of this meaning. And when he went to sleep he would say: “O God, by Your name I live and by Your name I die.”
