✧ Indeed, three men were in a cave when a rock fell and blocked the cave's entrance, sealing them in. One of them said, 'Remember any good deed you have done; perhaps Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will have mercy on us out of His mercy.' So one of them said, 'I once did a good deed. I had workers who worked for me, and my laborers came to me, and I hired each man for a known wage. Then one day a man came to me in the middle of the day, and I hired him on the same terms as his companions. He worked for the rest of his day as each of them had worked for his entire day. I saw it as my duty not to reduce his pay compared to what I had hired his companions for, because of his effort in his work. One of them said, "Will you give this man the same as you gave me, when he only worked half a day?!" I said, "O servant of Allah, I have not cheated you of anything from your agreement; it is my wealth, and I may dispose of it as I wish." He became angry, left, and abandoned his wages. So I set aside his due in a corner of the house for as long as Allah willed. Then after that some cattle passed by me, and I bought with it a young she-camel from the cattle. It grew as Allah willed. After a while an old man, weak and whom I did not recognize, passed by me and said, "I have a right with you." He reminded me until I recognized him, and I said, "It is you I seek; this is your right." I presented the entire herd to him. He said, "O servant of Allah, do not mock me. If you are not giving me charity, then give me my due." I said, "By Allah, I am not mocking you. It is your right; I have nothing of it." So I handed it all over to him. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, then relieve us.' He said, 'The mountain split open until they saw through it and could see.' The second said, 'I once did a good deed. I had surplus wealth, and a severe hardship befell the people. A woman came to me seeking charity. I said, "By Allah, it is not without your soul (i.e., you must give yourself to me)." She refused and left, then came back and adjured me by Allah, but I refused her and said, "No, by Allah, it is not without your soul." She refused and left, and mentioned it to her husband. He said to her, "Give him yourself and enrich your family." She returned to me and adjured me by Allah, but I refused her and said, "By Allah, it is not without your soul." When she saw that, she surrendered herself to me. When I uncovered her and intended to have intercourse with her, she trembled beneath me. I said to her, "What is the matter with you?" She said, "I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds." I said to her, "You feared Him in hardship, and I did not fear Him in ease." So I left her and gave her what was due to me for having uncovered her. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, then relieve us.' He said, 'It split until they recognized and it became clear to them.' The third said, 'I once did a good deed. I had elderly parents, and I had sheep. I used to feed my parents and give them drink, then return to my sheep. One day a rainstorm detained me, and I did not leave until evening. I came to my family, took my milking vessel, and milked while my sheep were standing. I went to my parents and found them asleep. It was hard for me to wake them and hard for me to leave my sheep. I remained sitting with my milking vessel in my hands until dawn woke them, and I gave them to drink. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, then relieve us.' Al-Nu'man said: It is as if I hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: He said, 'The mountain gaped open,' and Allah relieved them, so they came out.
