✧ I came to Ṣafwān b. ʿAssāl al-Murādī, and he said: “What has brought you?” I said: “Seeking knowledge.” He said: “Indeed, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, being pleased with what he seeks.” I said: “There is something that troubles me regarding wiping over the leather socks” – and Sufyān once said: “or in my chest” – “after defecation and urination, and you were a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I came to you to ask you: Did you hear anything from him about that?” He said: “Yes, he used to command us, when we were traveling or journeying, not to remove our leather socks for three days and their nights except on account of major ritual impurity, but not on account of defecation, urination, or sleep.” He said: I said to him: “Did you hear him mention love?” He said: “Yes. While we were with him on a journey, a Bedouin called out to him with a loud voice and said: ‘O Muḥammad!’ We said: ‘Woe to you! Lower your voice, for you have been forbidden from that.’ He said: ‘By God, I will not lower my voice.’ The Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘Here I am,’ and he answered him in a manner similar to his question” – and Sufyān once said: “and he answered him with something like what he had spoken” – “then he said: ‘What do you think of a man who loves a people but has not yet joined them?’ He said: ‘He is with those whom he loves.’” He said: “Then he did not cease speaking to us until he said: ‘Indeed, from the direction of the west there is a gate whose width is a journey of seventy – or forty – years. God, Mighty and Majestic, opened it for repentance on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and He will not close it until the sun rises from it [i.e., from the west].’”
