✧ One of the delegation who came to the Messenger of God ﷺ from Abd al-Qays narrated to me. He said: We gave him as a gift among what was given a leather bag or a water skin of tough dates or barni dates. He said: “What is this?” We said: This is a gift. He said: I think he looked at a date from it and returned it to its place, and said: “Deliver it to the family of Muhammad.” He said: The people asked him about things until they asked him about drink. He said: “Do not drink from gourds, green jars, hollowed stumps, or pitch-coated vessels. Drink from lawful containers with their mouths tied.” Then one of our speakers said to him: O Messenger of God, what do you know of what a gourd, green jar, hollowed stump, and pitch-coated vessel are? He said: “I do not know what they are. Which Hajar is the most fortified?” We said: Al-Mushaqqar. He said: “By God, I entered it and took its key.” He said: I had forgotten something from his account, and Ubayd Allah b. Abi Jarwa reminded me of it. He said: “I stood at the spring of al-Zara.” Then he said: “O God, forgive Abd al-Qays since they submitted willingly, not unwillingly, neither disgraced nor seeking vengeance, while some of our people do not submit until they are disgraced and vengeance is sought.” He said: He fervently turned his face from here, toward the qiblah, until he faced the qiblah and said: “The best people of the East are Abd al-Qays.”
