✧ When we entered the mosque of al-Jābiyah, I and Abū al-Dardāʾ, we met ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit. He took my right hand with his left, and Abū al-Dardāʾ’s left hand with his right, and he went out walking between us while we were conversing privately – and God knows best what we were conversing about; that is his saying. ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit said: “If the life of one of you or both of you is prolonged, you will soon see a man from the middle of the Muslims – meaning from their midst – who has recited the Qurʾan upon the tongue of Muhammad ﷺ, and he will repeat it and display it, and he will deem lawful its lawful and deem unlawful its unlawful, and he will alight at its stations, or he recited it upon the tongue of his brother as a recitation upon the tongue of Muhammad ﷺ, and he will repeat it and display it, and he will deem lawful its lawful and deem unlawful its unlawful, and he will alight at its stations – he will not turn among you except as the head of a dead donkey turns.” He said: While we were thus, Shaddād b. Aws and ʿAwf b. Mālik appeared and sat with us. Shaddād said: “The most fearful thing I fear for you, O people, is what I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ saying: of hidden desire and shirk.” ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit and Abū al-Dardāʾ said: “O God, forgiveness! Had not the Messenger of God ﷺ already…”
