✧ When the plague broke out, Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah stood before the people as a preacher and said, 'O people, this plague is a mercy from your Lord, an answer to the supplication of your Prophet, and the death of the righteous before you. Abu Ubaydah asks Allah to apportion to him his share of it.' Then he was stricken and died, may Allah have mercy on him. Muadh b. Jabal was appointed as successor over the people. He stood as a preacher after him and said, 'O people, this plague is a mercy from your Lord, an answer to the supplication of your Prophet, and the death of the righteous before you. Muadh asks Allah to apportion to the family of Muadh their share of it.' Then his son Abd al-Rahman b. Muadh was stricken and died. Then he stood up and supplicated his Lord for himself. He was stricken in the palm of his hand. I saw him looking at it, then kissing the back of his hand and saying, 'I would not love to have anything of this world in exchange for what is in you.' When he died, Amr b. al-As was appointed as successor over the people. He stood among us as a preacher and said, 'O people, when this plague strikes, it blazes like fire. So seek refuge from it in the mountains.' Abu Wathilah al-Hudhali said to him, 'You lie, by Allah. I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you are worse than this donkey of mine.' Amr said, 'By Allah, I will not answer you for what you say, and by Allah, we will not stay before it.' Then he left and the people left, dispersing from him, and Allah pushed it away from them. This reached Umar b. al-Khattab regarding Amr's view, and by Allah, he did not dislike it.
