✧ When Muʿāwiyah came to us as a pilgrim, we entered Makkah with him. He said: He led us in the noon prayer with two rakʿahs, then departed to Dār al-Nadwah. He said: When ʿUthmān completed the prayer—when he came to Makkah, he prayed the noon, afternoon, and late evening prayers there as four rakʿahs each; then when he went out to Minā and ʿArafāt, he shortened the prayer; then when he finished the pilgrimage and stayed at Minā, he completed the prayer until he left Makkah. When Muʿāwiyah led us in the noon prayer with two rakʿahs, Marwān b. al-Ḥakam and ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān rose to him and said: 'No one has criticized your cousin with anything uglier than what you have criticized him with.' He said to them: 'And what is that?' He said: They said: 'Do you not know that he completed the prayer in Makkah?' He said: He said to them: 'Woe to you both! Was there anything other than what I did? I prayed them with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ.' They said: 'Your cousin used to complete it, and your differing from him is a fault.' He said: Muʿāwiyah then went out for the afternoon prayer and led us in it with four rakʿahs.
