✧ O my father, you told me that Dhu al-Yadayn met you at Dhu Khashab and informed you that the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed with them one of the two evening prayers—which is the afternoon prayer—and prayed two rak'ahs, and the swift among the people left saying: 'Has the prayer been shortened? Has the prayer been shortened?' The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up, and Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ followed him, and they were his close companions. Dhu al-Yadayn caught up with him and said: 'O Messenger of God, has the prayer been shortened, or did you forget?' He said: 'It has not been shortened, nor did I forget.' Then he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ and said: 'What does Dhu al-Yadayn say?' They said: 'He has spoken the truth, O Messenger of God.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ returned, and the people came back, and he prayed two rak'ahs, then he said the salam, then he prostrated the two prostrations of forgetfulness. Abu Sulayman said: 'I spoke for six or seven years, then he said the salam, and I was uncertain about it, and it is the stronger of my memory.'
