✧ My uncle dueled on the day of Khaybar with Marhab the Jew. Marhab said: 'Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, bearing arms, a proven hero; when wars come, they blaze.' My uncle 'Amir said: 'Khaybar knows that I am 'Amir, bearing arms, a bold adventurer.' They exchanged two blows, and Marhab's sword fell on 'Amir's shield, and he tried to strike low, but the sword rebounded onto his own shin and cut his artery, in which was his life. Salama b. al-Akwa' said: I met some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and they said: 'Amir's deed is void; he killed himself.' Salama said: I came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ weeping, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, 'Amir's deed is void.' He said: 'Who said that?' I said: 'Some of your companions.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'He lied who said that; rather, he has his reward twice. When he went out to Khaybar, he began reciting rajaz verses with the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and among them was the Prophet ﷺ, driving the mounts, while he said: By Allah, had it not been for Allah, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. Those who have wronged us, when they desire discord, we refuse, and we are never free of need for Your bounty, so make firm our feet when we meet, and send down tranquility upon us.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who is this?' He said: ''Amir, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Your Lord has forgiven you.' He said: He never sought forgiveness for any man specifically except that he was martyred. When 'Umar b. al-Khattab heard that, he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if only you had let us enjoy 'Amir.' He went forward and was martyred. Salama said: Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sent me to 'Ali and said: 'Today I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, or whom Allah and His Messenger love.' He said: I brought him, leading him, suffering from ophthalmia, and the Prophet of Allah ﷺ spat in his eye, then gave him the banner. Marhab came out swaggering with his sword and said: 'Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, bearing arms, a proven hero; when wars come, they blaze.' 'Ali b. Abi Talib, may Allah honor his face, said: 'I am he whom my mother named Haydar, like a lion of the thickets, fierce of countenance; I give them full measure, the measure of the sandara.' Then he split Marhab's head with the sword, and the victory was at his hands.
