✧ One day Abu Salamah came to me from the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “I heard a saying from the Messenger of God ﷺ that pleased me. He said: ‘No misfortune befalls any Muslim such that he seeks return to God at the time of his misfortune and then says: “O God, reward me in my misfortune and leave me something better in its place,” except that this will be done for him.’ ” Umm Salamah said: “I memorized this from him. When Abu Salamah died, I sought return to God and said: ‘O God, reward me in my misfortune and leave me something better in its place.’ Then I reconsidered and said: ‘How could I have anyone better than Abu Salamah?’ When my waiting period ended, the Messenger of God ﷺ asked permission to enter while I was tanning a hide. I washed my hands of the acacia pods and gave him permission. I placed for him a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber, and he sat on it. He proposed to me for himself. When he finished speaking, I said: ‘O Messenger of God, it is not that I have no desire for you, but I am a woman with intense jealousy, and I fear that you may see something from me for which God would punish me. I am a woman who has entered old age, and I have dependents.’ He said: ‘As for the jealousy you mentioned, God, Mighty and Majestic, will soon remove it from you. As for the old age you mentioned, I have been afflicted with the same as you. As for the dependents you mentioned, your dependents are my dependents.’ She said: ‘So I surrendered myself to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ married her.’ Umm Salamah said: ‘God indeed replaced Abu Salamah for me with someone better—the Messenger of God ﷺ.’
