✧ He came to Basra when Abd Allah b. Abbas was governor there, and saw a man standing in the shade of the palace saying: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth, Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth," not adding anything else. I drew near to him and said: "You have said 'Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth' many times." He replied: "By Allah, if you wish, I will tell you." I said: "Yes." He said: "Sit down then." Then he said: "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah at such-and-such a time. Two elders of the tribe had a son who had gone off and joined him. They said: 'You are going to Madinah. Our son has joined this man, so go to him and ask him for him. If he refuses except for ransom, then ransom him.' So I came to Madinah and entered upon the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, two elders of the tribe commanded me to ask you for a son of theirs.' He said: 'Do you know him?' He replied: 'I know his lineage.' So he called the boy and he came. Then he said: 'Here he is; take him to his parents.' I said: 'The ransom, O Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'It is not proper for us, the family of Muhammad, to consume the price of anyone from the descendants of Isma'il.' Then he struck my shoulder and said: 'Do I fear for Quraysh but themselves?' I said: 'What is wrong with them, O Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'If you live long, you will see them here until you see people among them like sheep between two watering troughs, once to this one and once to that one.' So I see people seeking permission to enter upon Ibn Abbas; I saw them last year seeking permission to enter upon Mu'awiya, and I remembered what the Prophet ﷺ said."
