✧ I went out among ten young men with the Prophet ﷺ, while he was the most detested of people to us. They gave the adhan, so we stood up giving the adhan in mockery of them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Bring me these young men." Then he said: "Give the adhan." So they gave the adhan, and I was one of them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Yes, this is the one whose voice I heard. Go and give the adhan for the people of Makkah." He then wiped over his forelock and said: "Say: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah twice; wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah twice. Then return and testify: ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah twice; wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah twice; hayya ala al-salah, hayya ala al-salah; hayya ala al-falah, hayya ala al-falah twice; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; la ilaha illa Allah. When you give the first adhan of dawn, say: al-salah khayrun min al-nawm, al-salah khayrun min al-nawm. When you give the iqamah, say it twice: qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah. Have you heard?" He said: Abu Mahdhurah would not cut his forelock nor part it, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had wiped over it.

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī says that at the beginning of the adhān one says Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, four times, and he held that this is preserved through the transmission of trustworthy (thiqah) memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) in the ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd and the ḥadīth of Abū Maḥdhūrah, and that it is an addition which must be accepted.

machine translationThe fourfold repetition of the takbīr at the beginning of the adhān is well preserved (maḥfūẓ) in the narration of the reliable (thiqah) memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) in the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. Zayd and of Abū Maḥdhūrah. It is an addition that must be accepted, and the practice with them in Mecca, among the family of Abū Maḥdhūrah, followed it down to his time.
