Translation

✧ He said to me: 'What is the matter, O Jabir?' I said: 'I lost my camel, or my camel went astray on a dark night.' He said: 'This is your camel. Go and take it.' I went in the direction he indicated, but I did not find it. I returned to him and said: 'O Prophet of God, I did not find it.' He said: 'This is your camel. Go and take it.' I went in the direction he indicated, but I did not find it. I returned to him and said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Prophet of God, by God, I did not find it.' He said: 'Take your time.' When he had finished, he took me by the hand and went with me until we came to the camel, and he handed it over to me, saying: 'This is your camel.' He said: 'The people had already departed.' He said: 'While I was riding my camel in my turn—and it was a slow-paced camel—I said: 'Alas for my mother! I have only a slow camel.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ was riding behind me, and he heard what I said. He caught up with me and said: 'What did you say, O Jabir?' I forgot what I had said. I said: 'I did not say anything, O Prophet of God.' Then I remembered, and I said: 'O Prophet of God, alas! I have only a slow camel.' He said: 'The Prophet ﷺ struck the camel's hindquarters with a whip or with my whip, and it went off at the fastest pace of any camel I had ever ridden, and it was pulling against my reins.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: 'Will you sell me this camel of yours?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'For how much?' I said: 'For an uqiyyah.' He said: 'Excellent! Excellent! How much is an uqiyyah of a water-carrying camel worth, and a water-carrying camel!' I said: 'O Prophet of God, there is no camel in Madinah that I would prefer to have in its place.' He said: 'The Prophet ﷺ said: I have bought it for an uqiyyah.' I dismounted from the saddle to the ground. He said: 'What is the matter with you?' I said: 'It is your camel.' He said: 'Mount your camel.' I said: 'It is not my camel; it is your camel.' He said: 'We used to reply to him twice in a matter when he commanded us, and when he commanded us the third time, we did not reply.' He said: 'So I mounted the camel and went to my paternal aunt in Madinah.' He said: 'I said to her: Don't you see that I have sold our camel to the Messenger of God ﷺ for an uqiyyah?' He said: 'I did not see her more pleased by that.' He said: 'It was a fine camel.' He said: 'Then I took some leaves and fed it, and I took its halter and led it to the Messenger of God ﷺ. I found the Messenger of God ﷺ standing, talking with a man.' I said: 'Here you are, O Prophet of God, your camel.' He took its halter, then called Bilal and said: 'Weigh out an uqiyyah for Jabir and give him full measure.' I went with Bilal, and he weighed out an uqiyyah for me and gave me full weight.' He said: 'I returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was standing, talking to that man. I said to him: 'He has weighed out an uqiyyah for me and given me full weight.' While he was thus, I went to my house without noticing. He called out: 'Where is Jabir?' They said: 'He has gone to his family.' He said: 'Catch up with him and bring him to me.' His messenger came to me running. He said: 'O Jabir, the Messenger of God ﷺ is calling you.' I came to him, and he said: 'Take your camel.' I said: 'It is not my camel; it is your camel, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Take your camel.' I said: 'It is not my camel; it is your camel, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Take your camel.' So I took it. He said: 'By my life, we did not benefit you in order to leave you without it.' He said: 'I came to my paternal aunt with the camel and the uqiyyah. I said to her: 'What do you think? The Messenger of God ﷺ gave me an uqiyyah and returned my camel to me!'
