✧ He said: 'Which two men will guard us this night of ours from our enemy?' A man from the Muhajirun and a man from the Ansar said: 'We will guard you, O Messenger of God.' They went out to the mouth of the mountain pass, away from the army. Then the Ansari said to the Muhajir: 'Will you suffice me for the first part of the night and I will suffice you for the last part, or will you suffice me for the last part and I will suffice you for the first part?' The Muhajir said: 'Rather, suffice me for the first part and I will suffice you for the last part.' So the Muhajir slept, and the Ansari stood praying. He began reciting a surah from the Quran. While he was reciting it, the woman's husband came. When he saw the man standing, he knew that he was the watchman of the people, so he shot an arrow at him and struck him. He pulled it out and kept standing, reciting the surah he was in, and he did not move, disliking to interrupt it. Then the woman's husband shot another arrow at him and struck him. He pulled it out and kept standing, praying, and he did not move, disliking to interrupt it. Then the woman's husband shot a third arrow at him and struck him. He pulled it out and placed it down, then he bowed and prostrated. Then he said to his companion: 'Sit up, for I have been hit.' The Muhajir sat up. When the woman's husband saw the two of them, he fled, knowing that he had been detected. The Ansari was flowing with blood from the shots of the woman's husband. His brother the Muhajir said to him: 'May God forgive you! Why did you not alert me when he first shot you?' He said: 'I was in a surah of the Quran that I had begun and was praying with, and I disliked to interrupt it. By God, had it not been for neglecting a gap that the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me to guard, my soul would have departed before I interrupted it.'
