✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām was told of his arrival while he was in his palm grove. He came to him and said: 'I will ask you about things that only a prophet knows. If you tell me them, I will believe in you; and if you do not know them, I will know that you are not a prophet.' He said: So he asked him about resemblance, about the first thing the people of Paradise will eat, and about the first thing that will gather people. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Gabriel informed me of them just now.' He said: 'That is the enemy of the Jews.' He said: 'As for resemblance, if the man's fluid precedes the woman's fluid, the child resembles him; and if the woman's fluid precedes the man's fluid, the child resembles her. The first thing the people of Paradise will eat is the extra lobe of a fish's liver. As for the first thing that will gather people, it is a fire that will come from the east and drive them to the west.' So he believed and said: 'I bear witness that you are the Messenger of God.' Ibn Salām said: 'O Messenger of God, the Jews are a slanderous people, and if they hear of my Islam, they will slander me. So hide me with you, and send to them and ask them about me.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ hid him, and sent to them, and they came. He said: 'What sort of man is ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām among you?' They said: 'He is our best and the son of our best, our master and the son of our master, our scholar and the son of our scholar.' He said: 'What if he embraces Islam—will you embrace Islam?' They said: 'May God protect him from that.' He said: 'O ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām, come out to them and inform them.' So he came out and said: 'I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God.' They said: 'He is our worst and the son of our worst, our ignoramus and the son of our ignoramus.' Ibn Salām said: 'I told you, O Messenger of God, that the Jews are a slanderous people.'
