✧ I was riding behind Abu Talhah on the day of Khaybar, and my foot was touching the foot of the Messenger of God ﷺ. [He said:] We came upon them when the sun had risen, and they had brought out their livestock and gone out with their axes, baskets, and spades. They said: "Muhammad and the army!" The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "God is greatest! Khaybar is ruined. When we descend upon a people's territory, evil is the morning of those who were warned." He said: God [Mighty and Majestic] routed them. He said: A beautiful slave girl fell to the share of Dihyah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ bought her for seven heads, then gave her to Umm Sulaym to prepare her and make her ready. She was Safiyyah bt. Huyayy. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ made her wedding feast of dates, dried curd, and clarified butter. He said: The ground was dug into pits, [he said:] and leather mats were brought and placed in them. Then dried curd, dates, and clarified butter were brought, and the people ate their fill. He said: The people said: "We do not know whether he married her or took her as a concubine." They said: "If he veils her, she is his wife; if he does not veil her, she is a concubine." When he wanted to ride, he veiled her until she sat on the rear of the camel, so they knew that he had married her. When they drew near to Madinah, he urged his mount and we urged ours. He said: The she-camel al-ʿAdba' stumbled. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ was thrown off and she was thrown off. He said: He stood up and shielded her. He said: The women had looked out and said: "May God distance the Jewess!" I said: "O Abu Hamzah, did the Messenger of God ﷺ fall?" He said: "Yes, by God, he did fall." I also attended the wedding feast of Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh. He fed the people their fill of bread and meat, and he would send me to invite the people. When he finished, he stood up and I followed him. Two men remained, lingering in conversation and did not leave. He passed by his wives, greeting each one: "Peace be upon you, O people of the house, how has your morning been?" They would say: "Fine, O Messenger of God, how did you find your family?" He would say: "Fine." When he returned and I returned with him, and when he reached the door, there were the two men still lingering in conversation. When they saw that he had returned, they got up and left. He said: By God, I do not know whether I informed him or revelation came to him that they had left. He returned and I returned with him. When he placed his foot on the threshold of the door, he let down the curtain between me and him, and God revealed these verses: "Do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless you are given permission for a meal, without waiting for its preparation" [Quran 33:53] until he finished them.
