✧ Al-Walid b. Uqba led the people in the dawn prayer with four rak'ahs, then turned to them and said, 'Shall I add more for you?' That was reported to Uthman, and he ordered that he be flogged. Ali said to al-Hasan b. Ali, 'Rise, O Hasan, and flog him.' He said, 'What are you to do with that?' Ali said, 'Rather you are unable and weak. Rise, O Abdullah b. Ja'far, and flog him.' So Abdullah b. Ja'far rose and flogged him while Ali counted. When he reached forty, he said to him, 'Stop.' Then he said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ gave forty lashes for wine, Abu Bakr gave forty, and Umar at the beginning of his caliphate, then Umar completed it to eighty. Each is a sunna.'
