Musnad Ahmad 12057

Translation

✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām came to the Messenger of God ﷺ when he arrived in Madinah, and said: “O Messenger of God, I will ask you about three things that only a prophet knows.” He said: “Ask.” He said: “What is the first sign of the Hour? What is the first thing the people of Paradise eat? And why does a child resemble its father and its mother?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Jibrīl ﷺ just told me about them.” He said: “That is the enemy of the Jews among the angels.” He said: “As for the first sign of the Hour, it is a fire that will emerge from the east and drive the people to the west. As for the first thing the people of Paradise eat, it is an extra lobe of a fish’s liver. As for the child’s resemblance to its father and mother: if the man’s fluid precedes the woman’s fluid, the child resembles him; and if the woman’s fluid precedes the man’s fluid, the child resembles her.” He said: “I testify that there is no god but God and that you are the Messenger of God.” He said: “O Messenger of God, the Jews are a slanderous people. If they learn of my Islam, they will slander me before you. So send for them and ask them about me: What sort of man is Ibn Salām among you?” So he sent for them and said: “What sort of man is ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām among you?” They said: “Our best and the son of our best, our most learned and the son of our most learned, our most knowledgeable in jurisprudence and the son of our most knowledgeable in jurisprudence.” He said: “What if he becomes Muslim — will you become Muslims?” They said: “May God protect him from that.” Then Ibn Salām came out and said: “I testify that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God.” They said: “Our worst and the son of our worst, our most ignorant and the son of our most ignorant.” Ibn Salām said: “This is what I feared from them.”
