✧ Umar b. al-Khattab traveled to Syria after his first journey there, until when he drew near it, it reached him and those with him that the plague was widespread in it. His companions said to him, "Turn back and do not plunge into it. If you were to enter it while it is there, we would not think you should leave it." So he turned back to Madinah. He halted for the night in that place, and I was the closest of the people to him. When he stirred, I stirred with him, following him, and I heard him say, "They turned me back from Syria after I had drawn near it, because the plague is in it. Indeed, my turning away from it will not delay my appointed time, and my going there would not hasten my appointed time. Indeed, if I had reached Madinah and finished the needs that I must attend to there, I would have traveled until I entered Syria, then I would have camped at Hims, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Allah will surely raise from it on the Day of Resurrection seventy thousand with no reckoning and no punishment upon them. Their rising will be between the olive trees and its wall in the red barren land of it.'"
