✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ gave what he gave of those gifts among Quraysh and the Arab tribes, and there was nothing of it for the Ansar, this clan of the Ansar felt resentment in themselves, until talk increased among them, until one of them said: The Messenger of God ﷺ met his own people. Then Sa'd b. 'Ubadah entered upon him and said: O Messenger of God, this clan has felt resentment against you in themselves for what you did with this booty that you obtained. You distributed it among your people and gave great gifts among the Arab tribes, but there was nothing of it for this clan of the Ansar. He said: Where are you in that, O Sa'd? He said: O Messenger of God, I am but a man of my people, and what am I? He said: Then gather your people for me in this enclosure. He said: So Sa'd went out and gathered the Ansar in that enclosure. He said: Some men from the Emigrants came, and he left them; they entered. Others came, and he sent them back. When they had gathered for him, Sa'd came to him and said: This clan of the Ansar has gathered for you. He said: So the Messenger of God ﷺ came to them, praised God, and extolled Him with what He is worthy of, then said: O assembly of the Ansar, what talk has reached me from you and resentment you have felt in yourselves? Did I not come to you when you were astray, and God guided you? When you were poor, and God enriched you? When you were enemies, and God united your hearts? They said: Indeed, God and His Messenger are more gracious and more excellent. He said: Will you not answer me, O assembly of the Ansar? They said: With what shall we answer you, O Messenger of God? To God and His Messenger belong grace and excellence. He said: By God, if you wished you could say, and you would be truthful and believed: You came to us rejected, and we believed you; forsaken, and we helped you; driven out, and we sheltered you; poor, and we comforted you. Did you find resentment in yourselves, O assembly of the Ansar, over a trifle of this world by which I sought to win over a people so that they might submit, while I entrusted you to your Islam? Are you not pleased, O assembly of the Ansar, that the people go with sheep and camels, while you return with the Messenger of God to your homes? By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, were it not for the emigration, I would be a man of the Ansar. If the people took one valley and the Ansar took another valley, I would take the valley of the Ansar. O God, have mercy on the Ansar and the children of the Ansar and the children's children of the Ansar. He said: The people wept until their beards became wet, and they said: We are pleased with the Messenger of God as our portion and share. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ departed, and they dispersed.
