✧ ʿAlī sent from Yemen to the Messenger of God ﷺ a piece of gold in a tanned leather that had not been extracted from its dust. The Messenger of God ﷺ divided it among four: Zayd al-Khayl, al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis, ʿUyayna b. Ḥiṣn, and ʿAlqama b. ʿUlātha—or ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl; ʿUmāra was uncertain. Some of his companions, the Anṣār, and others found fault with that. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Will you not trust me, when I am the trustee of the One in heaven? News comes to me from heaven morning and evening.” Then a man with sunken eyes, prominent cheekbones, a bulging forehead, a thick beard, a raised loincloth, and a shaved head came to him and said: “Fear God, O Messenger of God!” He said: He raised his head toward him and said: “Woe to you! Am I not the most rightful of the people of the earth to fear God?” Then he turned away. Khālid said: “O Messenger of God, shall I strike his neck?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Perhaps he prays.” He said: “Many a praying person says with his tongue what is not in his heart.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I was not commanded to pierce people's hearts or split open their bellies.” Then the Prophet ﷺ looked at him as he was walking away and said: “Indeed, from the offspring of this one will come a people who recite the Qurʾān but it does not pass beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through the game.”
