حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي الْعَلَاءُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ:
تَدْرُونَ مَا الْغِيبَةُ ؟ قَالُوا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ، قِيلَ: فَإِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ ؟ قَالَ: إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ

✧ "Do you know what backbiting is?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Mentioning your brother with what he dislikes." It was said, "What if my brother actually has what I say?" He said, "If he has what you say, you have backbitten him; and if he does not have it, you have slandered him."
