أَخْبَرَنَا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ
أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ مَا الْغِيبَةُ؟ قَالَ «ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ» قِيلَ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ «فَإِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ»

✧ It was said to him: What is backbiting? He said: 'Your mentioning your brother with what he dislikes.' It was said: What if what I say about my brother is true? He said: 'If it is in him, then you have backbitten him, and if it is not in him, then you have slandered him.'
