✧ I was sitting with my father when Ali b. Abi Talib came to us on some matter concerning the people. Then he said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: Say: O God, guide me and direct me aright; and remember with guidance Your guiding to the path, and remember with right direction the directing of the arrow by the forefinger. And he forbade me to place my ring on this one.' Abu Burda pointed with his thumb to the forefinger or the middle finger—Asim said: I was confused as to which one it was. He said: Ali said: 'And the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the mithara and the qassiyya.' He said: 'As for the mithara, it is something that women used to make for their husbands which they placed on their saddles. As for the qassiyya, they are garments of Syria—it was said: Syria or Egypt—ribbed, containing silk, and having patterns like citrons.'
