✧ I was sitting with Abu Musa when Ali came to us. He stood over Abu Musa and ordered him to do something concerning the people's affairs. Ali said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Say: O Allah, guide me and direct me aright. Remember guidance as the guidance of the road, and remember right direction as the straightness of an arrow.' He forbade me from placing my ring on this one" – Abu Burda pointed to the forefinger or the middle finger; Asim said: "I am the one who was uncertain which of the two he meant" – "and he forbade me from using the mithara and qassiyya." Abu Burda said: "I said: 'O Commander of the Believers, what is the mithara and what is the qassiyya?'" He said: "As for the mithara, it is something women used to make for their husbands to place on their saddles. As for the qassiyya, they are garments that used to come to us from Syria or Yemen – Asim was unsure – containing silk, with patterns like citrons." Abu Burda said: "When I saw the sabaniyya, I recognized that it was that."
