حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ حَفْصٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي
أَنَّهُ كَانَ مَعَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ إِلَى رَحْلِهِ وَانْصَرَفْنَا مَعَهُ، فَالْتَفَتَ فَرَأَى نَاسًا يُصَلُّونَ، فَقَالَ: مَا يَصْنَعُ هَؤُلَاءِ ؟ قُلْتُ: يُسَبِّحُونَ. قَالَ: لَوْ كُنْتُ مُسَبِّحًا لَأَتْمَمْتُ صَلَاتِي، يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَلَمْ يَزِدْ فِي السَّفَرِ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللهُ، ثُمَّ صَحِبْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ صَحِبْتُ عُمَرَ فَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ صَحِبْتُ عُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللهُ، وَقَالَ اللهُ: لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ

✧ He was with Ibn Umar on the road to Makkah, and he led them in prayer. Then he went to his mount, and we went with him. He turned and saw people praying, so he said, 'What are these people doing?' I said, 'They are praying voluntary prayers.' He said, 'If I were to pray voluntary prayers, I would have completed my prayer. O son of my brother, I accompanied the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he did not add in travel to more than two rak’ahs until God took him. Then I accompanied Abu Bakr, and he did not add to more than two rak’ahs. Then I accompanied Umar, and he did not add to more than two rak’ahs. Then I accompanied Uthman, and he did not add to more than two rak’ahs until God took him. And God said: You have indeed in the Messenger of God an excellent example.'
